Espresso spent coffee ground panels
CoPHEE Board™ is an architectural-grade bio-based composite panel manufactured by upcycling spent espresso coffee grounds. Its deep coffee-brown color, naturally textured surface and unique material identity make it an ideal solution for furniture, interior architecture and custom product applications where sustainability and aesthetics go hand in hand.
The collaboration between PHEE and Nespresso Greece began in 2020, when we approached the Nespresso team, through a Nestlé Greece Innovation Programme, with the idea of transforming spent coffee grounds recovered from Nespresso's newly launched capsule recycling scheme into a new bio-based material using PHEE's manufacturing technology.
Over the following three years, our teams worked closely on material research, optimization and product development, leading to the creation of CoPHEE Board™, a novel bio-based panel manufactured by upcycling spent coffee grounds recovered from used Nespresso capsules.
Post-consumer coffee waste, transformed into high-value materials for architecture, furniture and product.
Today, CoPHEE Board™ serves as the raw material for retail products available through Nespresso sales channels, as well as custom merchandising collections developed for Nespresso Professional. The collaboration demonstrates how post-consumer coffee waste can be transformed into high-value materials for architecture, furniture and custom product applications.
For PHEE Materials Lab, this project is a strong example of how long-term industrial collaboration can turn residual biomass into commercially successful materials, creating measurable environmental impact while accelerating the transition towards a circular economy.
